When most newborn kittens are nestled close to their mothers, warm and safe, one tiny black baby entered the world with no one beside her. Barely four days old, her cries echoed softly into the air, calling for help that—by a stroke of luck—was on its way.
This fragile life was discovered completely alone, trembling and hungry, yet showing a spark of spirit that refused to fade. She may have been small enough to fit in a single hand, but she had a will to survive larger than life itself.
A Fragile Beginning
That little kitten would soon be called Bertrille, or Bertie for short. Her story began with hardship, but it quickly became one of hope, love, and second chances.
When Ellen Carozza, founder of the Chris Griffey Memorial Feline Foundation in Arlington, learned about the helpless kitten, she didn’t hesitate. Ellen and her team specialized in giving fragile newborns a fighting chance—and Bertie needed one desperately.

From the moment Ellen took her in, Bertie’s future began to change. She was placed in a warm incubator, wrapped in soft blankets, and surrounded by the gentle hum of equipment that would keep her alive. But even the best medical care couldn’t replace what she truly needed next: a mother’s touch.
Finding Love and Strength
That’s when Kimberly, one of Ellen’s devoted foster caregivers, entered the story. With a heart as big as her patience, Kimberly became the nurturing presence Bertie had been missing.
Every few hours, she bottle-fed her. She gently rubbed her tiny body to help her eat and sleep. And every time she opened the incubator door, Bertie would lift her head and meow, as if saying, “I’m still here. I’m not giving up.”

Under Kimberly’s care, Bertie’s transformation was nothing short of miraculous. Her fragile body began to fill out, her legs grew stronger, and her curious eyes sparkled with life. She quickly learned that she loved being held—and she’d stretch her little paws toward Kimberly whenever she wanted cuddles.
The two became inseparable. Bertie was more than just a foster kitten—she was family. As the days turned into weeks, the once-fragile newborn blossomed into a playful, curious young cat who wanted to explore everything.

Sometimes, her adventurous side even got her into trouble. Kimberly would laugh as Bertie managed to sneak out of her incubator just to find her foster mom. Once out, she’d crawl up onto her lap or purr contentedly beside her—proof that love, more than anything, can heal even the most fragile heart.
To make her days more exciting, Kimberly began taking Bertie along on outdoor picnics. Safely tucked inside a backpack, the little kitten would peek out at the sunshine and fresh air, her tiny face full of wonder.
These small adventures helped her grow brave, confident, and endlessly curious about the world around her.
A Beautiful Transformation
As the weeks passed, Bertie’s body changed almost as beautifully as her story. Her once-black fur took on a soft smoky hue that shimmered under the light, giving her a one-of-a-kind charm. Her eyes, bright and full of mischief, told a story of triumph.
By the time she was old enough to eat on her own, use her litter box, and climb without wobbling, everyone at the foundation knew she was ready.
Kimberly loved her deeply, but she also knew that part of fostering meant letting go—so another family could fall in love with her too.

The day Bertie left was filled with bittersweet tears. Kimberly kissed her tiny forehead one last time, whispering words of love and pride.
Though it was hard to say goodbye, she knew Bertie’s journey was only beginning.

Soon, a kind family opened their hearts and home to Bertie. Surrounded by warmth and affection, she quickly adapted to her new life. She now spends her days playing, exploring, and curling up in cozy spots—living proof that even the smallest creature can rise from loneliness to love.
What began as a heartbreaking rescue turned into a story of resilience and connection. Bertie’s journey reminds us that sometimes, all it takes to change a life is one person willing to care.
