In December of 2022, Maureen and her husband were thrilled to begin a new chapter in life.
They had just purchased a cozy home, and with his carpentry skills and her passion for decorating, they dreamed of turning the space into a warm retreat for their family.
Along with their two indoor cats, Maximus and Chloe, the couple quickly began the process of unpacking boxes and making the house feel like their own.
But on the very first morning after moving in, something unexpected happened.
A Gentle Visitor Appears
As Maureen looked out the window, her eyes met those of a round orange cat sitting quietly on the porch.
His gaze was steady and curious, as though he had been waiting for her all along. She felt a strange pull in that moment, as if this meeting was no coincidence.
“I knew this cat was different,” she later explained. “It felt like he was meant to be part of our story.”
From that day forward, the couple’s plans to focus on renovations would be joined by a new, more tender priority—caring for the visitor they soon called Oranges.

Throughout those early weeks, the Friedbergs would often catch sight of the orange cat wandering up to the porch.
Sometimes he lingered, sometimes he slipped away quickly, but he always seemed to return.
What began as a surprising encounter quickly grew into something familiar and comforting.
From Stranger To Companion
As the seasons changed, Oranges became a constant presence. By springtime, his visits were no longer occasional—he came every day, almost like clockwork.
At first, he remained cautious, darting away the moment a food bowl was set outside. Still, he never stayed gone for long.
Hunger and perhaps quiet trust always brought him back.
Maureen and her husband accepted this gentle pattern and greeted him with patience, never pushing him further than he was ready to go.

Over the summer months, something remarkable began to shift. Oranges no longer ran when the door opened.
He would sit calmly on the porch, watching the couple work on their house projects. When meals arrived, he stayed nearby instead of retreating.
Soon, he claimed the rocking chair on the porch as his own. There, he would nap for hours, waiting for dinner or simply enjoying the safety he seemed to feel in their presence.
The couple fell in love with him more deeply each day.
They whispered to each other about how good it would feel to have him indoors, stretched across the couch or curled up at the foot of the bed.
Yet Oranges was not quite ready for that leap. While he accepted their food and their porch as his haven, the idea of stepping inside remained too overwhelming.
They respected his boundaries, knowing that true trust takes time.

A Home Built From Love
As autumn arrived, the evenings grew cold and the couple’s concern deepened.
Maureen couldn’t bear the thought of Oranges shivering through winter nights on the porch. That’s when her husband had an idea that changed everything.
Drawing from his carpentry talents, he began building a small house designed just for their orange guest.
What started as a simple plan for shelter grew into something extraordinary.

He constructed the tiny house with the same care and effort he would give to a home for himself. The walls were fully insulated.
The roof had shingles to keep out rain and snow. A miniature porch extended across the front.
Inside, a separate space was wired with a safe heater to keep the air warm, and a light glowed softly to make the place inviting.
When it was finished, they added a final touch: a little sign above the doorway that read Oranges Home.
The couple waited anxiously to see if their gift would be accepted.

On the very first night, their cameras captured the moment Oranges cautiously stepped inside. When Maureen saw him curl up in his new bed, tears filled her eyes.
It was clear he understood that this place had been made for him.
Since then, Oranges has spent nearly every night in his house, stretching belly-up across the blankets, safe from the frost and storms outside.

Watching him trot toward his little home on the cameras still fills Maureen with joy.
To her, it is proof that love can be shown in countless ways—even in shingles, insulation, and the warm glow of a porch light.
Yet the Friedbergs know that this is only the beginning.
They continue to work patiently to gain Oranges’ trust fully, hoping that soon he will feel ready to step inside the bigger house that has always been waiting for him.

For now, they treasure the sight of him dozing peacefully in his miniature home, knowing he is warm and cared for.
Maureen often dreams of the day she can scoop him into her arms, letting him nap on the couch or curl at the end of the bed like Maximus and Chloe.
“I just want him to know what it feels like to be safe,” she said softly. “To relax completely, to cuddle without fear, and to understand that he has always been loved.”
