Her Best Friend Found a Home, but This Gentle Kitten Still Waits by the Door

At just thirteen weeks old, Colleen is a kitten with a quiet charm that draws people in.

Residing at the Humane Society of York County in South Carolina, she may be one of the youngest there, but her presence is felt by all who meet her.

With her soft fur and wide, wondering eyes, she takes in the world with gentle curiosity — and offers her affection freely.

Small in Size, Big in Soul

One thing sets her apart visually: the absence of a tail. It’s unclear whether she was born this way or suffered an early injury.

Yet, watching her leap and dash across the room, you’d never guess she was missing anything at all. Her agility and zest for play match any kitten her age — and perhaps even surpass them.

Colleen doesn’t hold back when it comes to love.

She nestles against her fellow kittens, seeks out laps like familiar resting spots, and fills the room with the soft hum of her purr. It’s not just her appearance that captures hearts — it’s her open spirit.

A Quiet Moment Between Two Hearts

One peaceful day, a volunteer named Vicki came to check on the cats. Expecting the usual flurry of energy, she paused instead at a sight that felt different.

Colleen was sitting silently by the edge of her enclosure, a tiny paw extended through the bars.

Opposite her, another kitten named Pedro sat close, his paw meeting hers in the space between.

They weren’t playing. They weren’t moving. They simply rested there, paw to paw, as if sharing something understood only by the two of them.

It was a moment that spoke of companionship, of comfort in each other’s presence.

Though not related, they formed a quiet companionship — often found curled near each other, or moving in sync when allowed to roam. Their bond was a gentle reminder that connection doesn’t always need words or time — only trust.

When Pedro found a home of his own, Colleen stayed behind.

She lingered by the door, perhaps waiting, perhaps remembering. But even after that goodbye, she didn’t turn inward. She simply kept loving — just as she always had.

Still Hoping, Still Shining

Colleen is the kind of kitten who can brighten a room and soften a mood.

She’s playful, yes — tumbling after toys and darting with delight — but she’s also calm, often found curled in a patch of sunlight or beside another kitten, sharing space in sweet silence.

Though many have come through the shelter, some younger, some flashier, Colleen is still waiting for someone to pause — to really see her.

She’s ready in every way. Spayed, vaccinated, and eager to bring her warmth to a home that will let her be who she is: joyful, gentle, and deeply loving.

The shelter staff hopes she’ll find a home where another cat can keep her company — someone to chase, and later to curl up with.

Until that day comes, Colleen continues to wait. Not with sadness, but with patience. Every visitor receives her little spark of welcome.

Every day is a new chance. Somewhere, someone will feel that spark, and know they’ve found the companion they didn’t even know they needed
